The figures come from the Open Doors 2025 international student census and describe major fields of study in the 2024/25 academic year. The total includes enrolled international students and students participating in Optional Practical Training, consistent with the Open Doors headline population.

These are all-origin figures, not a China-only distribution. Open Doors notes that preferred majors vary by place of origin, so the national field mix should be used as market context rather than assigned directly to Chinese applicants.

Method note: field categories aggregate many detailed programs. Growth in a broad category does not establish demand, selectivity, employment outcomes or capacity for a specific degree at a specific institution.

What Changed

Math and computer science added 24,455 students in one year, rising from 280,922 to 305,377. It accounted for roughly one quarter of the entire international student population and more than half of the combined math/computer science and engineering total.

The next-largest fields did not follow the same path. Engineering increased by 6,853 students, while business and management changed by only 47. Physical and life sciences grew 7.8%, and social sciences grew 2.0%.

The strongest percentage increase came from health professions, but from a smaller base. Fine and applied arts moved in the opposite direction, falling from 54,159 to 49,542. Field-level change is therefore more informative than the statement that international enrollment grew 5% overall.

Why It Matters

Program choice shapes the geography and institutional type of international mobility. A national increase concentrated in a few fields will benefit universities with relevant capacity more than institutions whose international portfolio is concentrated elsewhere.

Field totals also interact with academic level and post-study participation. A large field may include graduate students and OPT participants as well as undergraduates. The data do not show that every added student was a new entrant in fall 2024.

For China-market analysis, this table establishes the U.S. competitive environment. It does not prove that Chinese students changed majors at the same rate. A China-specific conclusion requires a field-by-origin table or institution-level applicant data.

Implications for Students

Students should not treat national popularity as a ranking of personal value. Program curriculum, prerequisites, faculty access, internship rules, total cost and realistic outcomes matter more than the size of a national field category.

Rapid growth can expand peer and employer networks, but it can also increase course demand and competition for internships or assistantships. Applicants should ask for current program-level cohort size and support rather than relying on national totals.

Implications for Institutions

Institutions should compare national field growth with their own completed applications, offers, deposits and enrollment by program. A mismatch can reveal a program-positioning, pricing, capacity or conversion issue that a university-wide total hides.

Claims about STEM demand should remain specific. Recruitment materials should identify the actual degree, curriculum and verified outcomes rather than using the national 57% STEM share as a general employability promise.

Programs in slower-growing fields need evidence-based differentiation: distinctive curriculum, interdisciplinary pathways, net cost, experiential learning and outcomes. Repeating broad national messages is unlikely to explain why a student should choose one institution.
